Pediatric surgical care in Lone Tree, Colorado

The board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists at Rocky Mountain Pediatric Surgery provide highly advanced surgical procedures designed specifically to meet the unique needs of children and teens. It also shows that our doctors are recognized by their peers, locally, regionally, and even globally, for their ability to deliver effective pediatric treatments with positive outcomes.

This is due, in part, to our surgeons’ unparalleled experience and innovation with minimally invasive techniques (see sidebar for examples), which often reduce pain, complications, hospital stays, recovery time and scarring. The team is always finding new ways to update techniques and processes to reduce the impact of surgery on the body by expanding the capabilities of minimally invasive surgery.

Pediatric surgeries we offer

Our team is highly qualified to perform many surgical procedures. We are also proud to be a part of a larger network, Rocky Mountain Pediatric Specialists, which allows us to bring in an added level of care for highly specialized procedures such as ear, nose and throat (ENT) or cardiac surgery.

Because minimally invasive surgery is so important to our program, we have helped design a pediatric-specific minimally invasive operating suite where we perform our procedures. These procedures are always performed using the least invasive option that is medically safe. Some of the surgical treatments we perform include:

  • Neonatal surgery
    • Repairing congenital abnormalities, including congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM)
    • Treating esophageal atresia (EA)
    • Other neonatal and perinatal disorders
  • Pediatric general surgery
    • Hernia repair
    • Treating hernias, including inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias and epigastric hernias.
    • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Chest wall abnormality correction

Chest wall abnormality correction

A chest wall abnormality is a structural deformity of the chest, which can occur in two different ways:

  • Pectus excavatum: Sometimes described as ‘funnel’ or ‘sunken,’ the breastbone dips inward. This is the most common type of chest wall abnormality and affects about one in 300 children.
  • Pectus carinatum: Often called ‘pigeon chest,’ the breastbone protrudes. This affects about one in 1,000 children.

While these conditions are present at birth, they are often not recognized until adolescence. The conditions, especially pectus excavatum, may affect breathing during exercise, respiratory infections, asthma and the development of scoliosis. Most commonly, patients have difficulty with self-esteem and other negative psychological impacts of the difference in their appearances.

Treatment for chest wall deformity

Treatment depends on the severity of the deformity and its impact on health and self-esteem. Once we have a proper diagnosis, we work with the patient and family to create a treatment plan based on the patient’s unique needs, goals and lifestyle. Our team will always begin with nonsurgical options first as long as they are effective. Often, pectus excavatum will require surgery for treatment, while pectus carinatum can be treated successfully with custom bracing.

Custom bracing for pectus carinatum

At Rocky Mountain Pediatric Surgery, patients with pectus carinatum can be fitted for a completely customized brace that can be worn to correct the deformity. Once the brace is made to match the patient’s unique anatomy, it is given to the family for the patient to wear under clothing for 24 hours a day for 6 months to a year. Often initiated just before a growth spurt, around ages 10-15, the brace will gently guide the structures back into the proper placement without significant pain or trauma to the patient.
